Vertical Alternatives

During a recent consultation, a client began the conversation, "I don't particularly care for vertical blinds."

"But, with windows now larger than ever, what are the alternative choices?"

The first step is to assess each window in a room on an individual basis

  • Do people frequently go in and out of a sliding door?
  • Is there strong sun in the morning or afternoon?
  • Is there a glare issue on the television?
  • Are there a lot of windows in the room that combine to create heat gain?
  • What are the privacy issues?

Firstly, a window treatment must perform to the challenges presented by the above considerations. Secondly, window treatments must be aesthetically pleasing and contribute to the overall design of the room.

Window treatments can be designed in a combination of styles within the same room that is aesthetically pleasing. Different styles specifically address the issues presented by each window. For example, in a bright, sunny room, choose shutters or wood blinds for smaller windows and a sliding solar panel track system at a high-traffic patio door. Solar screen materials come in beautiful colors and textures, allow you a view to the outside even when they are closed and are exceptionally easy to keep clean.

Sliding panel tracks also come in beautiful natural woven materials such as bamboos and tropical grasses that add an exotic tropical touch to your décor. They can also be fabricated with textiles that bring a color or textural accent that complements the other elements in the room.

Honeycomb shades are very versatile because even large shades are very light weight to operate. Many of the newest lift technologies are available on these shades including cordless which is important when considering children and pets. Also available as sliding panels, the shades allow for light-filtering privacy and solar control when closed and have very little "stack" when they are open so that they virtually disappear when not in use. Honeycomb shades also come in a true blackout quality, perfect for bedrooms.

Plantation shutters are also available as sliding panels and give the maximum flexibility in light and heat control, privacy and functionality. Available in beautiful stained hardwoods or water-resistant synthetics, shutters can be custom matched to wood blinds, natural woven shades or even existing window sill and trim finishes.

A window treatment professional can assist you in making an informed decision to selecting the right products within your budget to create a comfortable, beautiful room.
